Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Diamond prices are listed in accordance to the dollar so can fluctuate on a daily basis as the dollar rate shifts – but by marginal amount.

We source diamonds from all over the world from diamond manufacturers that comply with the United Nations Kimberley process in order to affirm all stones are conflict free.

Surface graining is something that is only visible under microscopic magnification and all diamonds have some form of surface graining.

This is the date from when the diamond was certified.

None of the stones we sell are second hand diamonds.

Because we source from such a high percentage of the diamond of the global diamond market, some diamond manufacturers are priced differently to others – essentially the items will be identical but they are just priced differently!

Do Not Confuse Certification and Appraisals

This is one of the most common scams in the industry where consumers get ripped off. There are many unethical jewelry stores who offer “wholesale deals” with questionable grading certificates designed to misrepresent the diamonds they sell.An appraisal is usually performed by a trained professional operating in individual capacity and pegs a value to the jewelry. Unlike a report generated by an independent gemological lab, the accuracy of the appraisal is only as accurate as the training, skills and tools the appraiser has.

Note: An appraisal is typically used for insurance purposes and post-purchase follow-ups. It shouldn’t be used as a substitute for a grading report.

Difference Between Certification Labs : When you are shopping for a piece of diamond jewelry, the grading report is an important document that helps you understand what you are buying. Among other uses, a grading report (certificate) from a reliable gemological lab also acts as a security screen against treated and synthetic diamonds. Thanks to a series of tests and scientific analysis performed on the diamond during the grading process, it is possible for gemologists to detect the presence of artificial treatments in color or clarity. In short, a grading report not only provides you with a scientific blueprint of the diamond’s properties and characteristics, it also attests to the diamond’s authenticity.

An Abundance of Grading Labs Around the World But…

Not all laboratories are created equal. For a consumer, the most important thing is for you to understand the differences between the various gemological institutes. You see, each lab uses its own grading system and nomenclature. As a result, a report from one institute may have show different results from a report issued by another lab for the same diamond. Let’s examine the differences between the most major gemological labs in the world – GIA, AGS, EGL, IGI ,HRD

GIA,

Established in 1931, the Gemological Institute of America, is the leading gemological laboratory in the world. It is the industry’s most trusted and most widely used service. Headquartered in Carlsbad, California, GIA has offices in many cities around the world, employing more than 1400 scientists, educators and certified diamond graders.Besides gem grading and certification, GIA also provides educational services and carries out intensive research work to keep up with fast changing technologies in the gemological field.

AGS

Stands for American Gemological Society and it is also a US based laboratory (with main offices in Las Vegas). The AGS laboratory is renowned for their scientific approach and research into diamond cut grading. Instead of using an alphabetical rating system, AGS uses a scale of 0-10 for rating a diamond’s characteristics, with 0 as the best and 10 as the worst.Like GIA, AGS is also known for their ethical standards and consistency in their grading system. In the US market, the AGS lab is the second most widely used lab service after GIA. They are also globally consolidated through offices in Israel, Belgium, India, China and Hong Kong. For first timers, the AGS methodology may seem confusing to figure out but once you get the hang of things, it’s pretty straightforward. Here’s an example to help you out: if a jeweler tells you that a diamond has an AGS cut grade of 0, clarity grade of 3 and color grade of 2.5, the equivalent on the GIA scale is a diamond with Excellent cut, VS1 clarity and I color.

EGL

Is an abbreviation for European Gemological Laboratory. It is a European founded grading agency and has a big global presence – with offices in London, Paris, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Johannesburg, among others. EGL is known for pioneering diamond grading techniques for stones weighing less than a carat. They are also notoriously known for the introduction of the ‘SI3’ clarity rating for diamonds and have a large market share in Europe.

IGI

Around the world, IGI certificates bring confidence when buying or selling diamonds, gemstones and jewelry. Total commitment to understanding consumer concerns has motivated IGI to develop comprehensive analysis and clear documentation for consumers. This empowers jewelry buyers to focus on finding precisely what they want, with full assurance in the integrity and quality of the IGI certification. IGI is the largest organization of its kind, with operating laboratories & offices in Antwerp, New York, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Bangkok, Tokyo, Dubai, Tel Aviv, Toronto, Los Angeles, Kolkata, New Delhi, Thrissur, Jaipur, Surat, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. The IGI School of Gemology has locations in Antwerp, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Surat, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Dubai, Shanghai, Rome, Ascoli Piceno, Trecastagni, Cavalese, Marcianise and offers a variety of courses designed for professionals and consumer enthusiasts alike. A certificate from IGI represents the all-important 5th C that no one should be without: Confidence. As the world's largest independent gem certification and appraisal institute for diamonds, colored gemstones and jewelry, IGI is a standard of excellence for industry professionals and consumers around the globe. The value of a precious stone is determined by its gemological makeup, natural rarity and finished quality. Diamonds and gemstones of similar appearance can have important differences in value. Even experts need powerful analytic tools to detect synthetics, treatments and enhancement processes. With more locations around the globe than any other laboratory, IGI is the world's most trusted name for the expert and impartial grading of diamonds, gemstones and jewelry. Gemstones should only change hands when accompanied by a certificate attesting to quality. Regardless of location or marketplace, an authentic IGI Laboratory Report is the common language of trust and confidence in the gemological world, and should be considered an essential part of any transaction. We take this responsibility very seriously.

HRD

HRD Antwerp's primary shareholder is the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC). The AWDC is a private foundation established in 1973 as the Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD) or Diamond High Council and represents the Belgian diamond industry. The HRD Antwerp diamond lab is the largest diamond lab in the world that issues reliable diamond grading and jewellery reports fully compliant with the rules for grading polished diamonds set by the International Diamond Council (IDC). We are the only international lab that strictly adheres to these rules, which have been approved by the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) and the International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA), the industry's two leading representative bodies. The integrity of the HRD Antwerp grading process is absolute. Our diamond lab applies an uncompromising operating code which it supports by using some of the most sophisticated technology and qualified graders available. HRD Antwerp's extensive in-house research department makes sure all processes are updated according to the latest industry developments. The absolute objectivity of the grading results is guaranteed by means of a double coding system: one set of codes is given to the owner, while the other follows the diamond in the lab. Strict anonymity guarantees strict objectivity.

We source our diamonds directly from the manufacturers that polish the stones.

All the diamonds sold by A Star Diamonds are 100% natural stones.

The diamonds as advertised on our website have been purchased from legitimate sources not involved in any funding conflicts. Please note that these stones are in compliance with the United Nations Resolutions and the Kimberley process. We at A Star Diamonds guarantee that our diamonds are conflict free based on personal knowledge and/or written guarantees.

Once your diamond has arrived in our showroom prior to setting we can definitely arrange for you to view the stone before it is set into the jewellery

With GIA ,HRD,IGI certified diamonds, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1 and VS2 are considered eyeclean . With EGL certified diamonds, IF, VVS1, VVS2, and VS1 are considered eyeclean with a smaller percentage of VS2 and SI1 stones also being eyeclean. Contact our sales team who can verify the stone’s clarity for you.

Diamonds that are said to be fluorescent contain particles that emit a visible (usually blue) glow when exposed to UV lighting. In rare cases, high levels of fluorescence can make stones appear milky or hazy, although for the most part fluorescence does not generally impact beauty or sparkle and can even make some lower colours (I, J, K, L, etc.) appear more colourless or white.

We need to CAD some rings in order to realise the proportions needing prior to casting – changing a ring after it is cast is a difficult and expensive process.

Because of the intricate nature of some of our designs ,some of our rings take 5-6 weeks to produce because the ring is cast to order based on the finger size (if known) and the measurements of the centre stone chosen and all side stones are hand set.

We do offer our bespoke service, should you have a jewellery design in mind that currently does not exist on our website you can contact our designer with your ideas who discuss with you directly the options for your piece and provide you with a quote.

The majority of our items take approximately 15-25 working days with some of our more elaborate pieces taking 5-6 weeks. Should you have a particular deadline in mind, you can always contact us and we can check to see if this can be accommodated.

All our jewellery is hallmarked in the United Kingdom. You will view the following hallmarks for each metal: Gold (Rose, White and Yellow) – 750 Platinum and Palladium – 950

We offer the majority of our jewellery in Gold (white, rose and yellow) and Platinum. Because of the density of platinum there are some more intricate pieces that cannot be produced in Platinum. Some of our wedding bands are also available in Palladium.

All our gold jewellery can be plated when this is necessary.

White gold is plated with rhodium which is part of the Platinum family and gives it a distinctive shining white appearance, as white gold in its natural state is actually darker and duller. For this reason, it is recommended to have a white gold engagement ring periodically re-plated when its colour is beginning to fade.

When newly produced both Platinum and White Gold are the same in appearance. Platinum is a denser metal so therefore feels a little more substantial in weight. White gold is less prone to surface scratches than Platinum, but in turn would need replating.

because we don't have a shop ,we have no business over heads. In November 2015, we conducted a mystery shopping trip and visited a range of competitors in-store including H. Samuel, Ernest Jones, Wempe, Tiffany & Co*, De Beers and Boodles. We asked them to quote on a range of GIA diamonds and compared that to the equivalent price of GIA diamonds on A Star Diamonds ltd. We found that we were between 25% to 68% better value and better quality *We assume Tiffany graded diamonds are equivalent to GIA. ** Allowing for the cost of the ring where applicable.

All prices are inclusive of VAT and there are no charges for postage and packing. You may be subject to local duties and taxes if your item is being delivered outside of the EU.
